Travel Basketball in Portland, Maine

Ole Port Basketball is a Travel Basketball program for boys and girls in Grades 3rd-8th who live in Portland.

Portland Recreation and the Ole Port Travel Basketball program have partnered together to offer a competitive addition to Portland Recreation’s standard Recreation Basketball Leagues. Ole Port Basketball launched for the 2023-2024 Southern Maine Hoops League (SMHL) season to give Portland kids an option to compete in a competitive Travel Basketball league against other towns. It is intended to complement, not compete with, the existing Portland Rec basketball leagues. It is open to all kids in grades 3-8 who live in Portland, Maine. Participants MUST try out and be selected to participate in this league as space is limited in each level. Rosters will be limited to a max of 10 players. There may be multiple teams at some grade levels if numbers allow. Teams will play in the Maine Basketball League (formerly the SMHL), with the season running from mid-November through mid-February. Games are on weekends in Portland, Saco and other local towns. Teams will practice at least once a week in Portland. If offered a spot on a team, the registration cost of $275 will be due in full to confirm the spot. The fee covers league registration, gym rental, insurance, and uniform. Scholarships are available for players in need. Ole Port Basketball is a volunteer-run organization and will oversee operations of the teams, recruitment of coaches, and scheduling. Portland Rec will additionally assist in operations, recruitment, facility use, and other structural components. 

  • Players must be registered for the Assessments to attend. (No cost to attend assessments)

  • Ole Port Travel Basketball and Portland Recreation do not guarantee any roster spots, and attending try-outs does not guarantee a roster spot. 

  • We encourage participants to play in both the Travel League and Portland Rec League if at all possible. There are separate registrations and fees for each league. 

No fees will be charged until team selections are determined. Participants that are selected, have the option to participate in both the Travel and Recreation League for their age level.

2025-26 Recap

We have concluded our 2025-26 Winter Season. We had 15 teams play in The Maine Basketball League, and two teams play in the Falmouth 3rd/4th League.

Additionally, we had a number of teams continue on for the postseason, competing in tournaments such as the Paper City Classic, Maine Town Team Championships, and New England Championships in Rhode Island.

Ole Port is looking for volunteers to coach our teams. If you would like to be a head coach or assistant coach, please fill out the brief questionnaire below. Coaches will be selected by the board and assigned to teams following assessments.

The Season

The Maine Basketball League season begins in mid-November. Teams play 12 games in the regular season, with all team advancing to a double-elimination playoff, which concludes in early February. Games are in Portland, Saco and other area locations. Teams practice at least once a week in Portland.

TEAM SPONSORSHIP: $495 - Your Business logo will be featured prominently on the back of a team’s shooting shirts. Your logo will also be posted on our website, and you will receive a featured post on our Facebook page. At the end of the season, you will receive a framed team photo to display at your business.

PLAYER SPONSORSHIP: $275 - Your donation will fund a scholarship for a player who cannot afford the registration fee. You will be recognized on our website and Facebook page for your generosity.
